Local Energy – Find out what other areas have achieved

This page and section of the Hub is written by the Local Energy Team who sit within the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Here at the BEIS Local Energy Team we know that local action will be an important part of the UK’s energy transition to a low carbon economy.

The Climate Change Act has committed the UK government by law to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% from 1990 levels and to prepare for climate change risks; both are to be achieved by 2050. Many of the changes needed to transform our energy system will be made locally; by residents, communities, businesses and the public sector. Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and local authorities are able to play a vital role in coordinating, facilitating and delivering the transformation of our energy system and we at the BEIS Local Energy Team can support you to achieve this.

All aspects of collective action to reduce, purchase, manage and generate energy are included within ‘local energy.’ As well as contributing to meeting the UK’s climate change targets, local energy projects bring added value to local areas such as:

·       Retain value, enhance productivity and increase growth in the local economy

·       Improve local health and well-being

·       Lower costs across sectors

·       Reduce local carbon emissions and improve air quality

Some areas of the UK have made huge strides towards developing a local low carbon economy. Read our case studies to find out about the types of initiatives they have been delivering. You will learn about a range of local energy projects, which have addressed specific local needs and demonstrate what local areas can achieve when they work together.

Bristol - Creating a municipal energy delivery unit to invest over £50 million in renewable energy assets and energy efficiency measures.

Nottingham – A collaborative approach and strategic bids have secured organisations in Nottingham over £13m of national and European funding to pilot cutting edge technology within the city.
