In this second session in its 2019 series on Climate Change, Islington RSA group focuses on energy use. What are the basic facts about sources of energy currently and for the future? In this second session in its 2019 series on Climate Change, Islington RSA group focuses on energy use. What are the basic facts about sources of energy currently and for the future? What options do local communities have for reducing consumption of energy from fossil fuels? How can we contribute as individuals?

To address these questions, Charlotte Johnson from the Institute for Sustainable Resources at UCL’s Bartlett School will outline examples of community-based energy schemes in London, the UK and abroad. As an anthropologist, her interest is as much in the community as the technology.

In the discussions that follow, we will address what we would do ourselves, and what we would want our local and national governments to offer if, for example:

private cars were to be significantly restricted

an annual quota of return flights were imposed

homes were required to become carbon neutral

Francis Ugboma, Head of Energy Services, Environment and Regeneration for Islington Council will also be joining us to respond to the discussion.
